Tuticorin Murder Case: Family Receives Victim's Body After Accused Arrest
In a tragic development from Tuticorin district, the family members of a 17-year-old girl, who was sexually assaulted and murdered, have finally received her body from the Tuticorin Government Medical College Hospital. This occurred on Friday, one day after the arrest of the accused in this heinous crime.
Details of the Incident and Investigation
The 17-year-old girl, hailing from a village in Tuticorin, went missing on the evening of March 10 after she left her house to answer nature's call. Her parents promptly filed a missing person report with the police, leading to the discovery of her body on March 11 near her residence. The body showed clear signs of strangulation injuries to the neck, indicating foul play.
In response, the Kulathur police swiftly altered the case from a missing person report to a murder investigation. They registered the case under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, highlighting the severity of the crime.
Postmortem and Family's Decision
A postmortem examination was conducted at the Tuticorin Government Medical College Hospital on March 12. However, the family members made a firm decision to delay receiving the body until the accused was apprehended. They expressed their desire for justice before proceeding with the final rites, underscoring their grief and determination.
Arrest of the Accused
On March 19, the police made a breakthrough in the case by arresting 38-year-old Dharma Muneeswaran, also known as Maveeran, from Sayalkudi in Ramanathapuram district. The arrest was a result of meticulous police work, involving the analysis of CCTV footage from the surrounding areas. This technological approach helped trace the suspect, leading to his custody.
Final Rites and Community Impact
Following the arrest, the family received the body on Friday and transported it to their village. There, they performed the necessary rituals and cremated the girl, bringing a somber closure to this painful chapter. The community has been deeply affected by this incident, raising concerns about safety and justice in rural areas.
This case highlights the critical role of police investigation and forensic evidence in solving crimes, while also shedding light on the emotional toll on victims' families. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of swift action under laws like the BNS and Pocso Act to combat such atrocities.
