The Mangaluru City Crime Branch (CCB) has arrested two youths accused of assaulting a police constable during night beat duty in the Urwa area. The accused, identified as Sachin KR (24) from Kokkada, Belthangady taluk, and Chandan (24) from Puttur taluk, Dakshina Kannada, had fled to Kerala after the incident.
Details of the Incident
The assault occurred at around 2:10 am on May 24, when two youths arrived on a red electric scooter near Narayana Guru Community Hall Road in Kodikal. Police personnel were on beat duty from the Urwa police station at the time. According to officials, the pillion rider allegedly attacked a police constable on the head with a piece of cement sheet, causing injuries.
Legal Action
A case was registered at the Urwa police station under Sections 121(1), 109, 132, and 3(5) of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) for assaulting police personnel on duty, obstructing government duty, and attempt to murder.
Investigation and Arrest
During the investigation, the CCB gathered evidence and received credible information about the suspects. The accused were traced and taken into custody at Kanhangad in Kerala on Tuesday. They were later handed over to the Urwa police station for further investigation. The scooter used in the offence has also been seized.
Background of the Accused
City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy CH stated that the accused were staying in a rented house at Phalguni Nagar in Ashoknagar. Sachin KR was employed as a driver at a sweets factory in Kuntikana, while Chandan worked as a technician at a showroom in Kuloor.
Motive Behind the Attack
Investigation revealed that the accused were roaming around the city around 2 am when beat police stopped and questioned them. Enraged by the questioning, they attacked the police constable with a piece of cement sheet.
