Two Arrested in Ganjam District for Alleged Witchcraft-Related Murder
In a shocking incident from Panchama village under the Golanthara police station limits in Ganjam district, two persons, including a woman, have been arrested for the brutal murder of a 65-year-old man. The arrest was made on Friday, five days after the crime, which occurred due to suspicions of witchcraft.
Details of the Accused and the Crime
The accused have been identified as Ghana Pradhan, aged 45, and his sister-in-law Pankaj Pradhan, aged 32, who is the wife of his brother. Police seized a sharp-cutting weapon from them, which was allegedly used to murder Ekadasi Nahak, a farmer from the same village.
According to authorities, the deceased was known for practising traditional healing methods, including witchcraft. People from various areas would visit him for treatment and to resolve personal issues. Ghana Pradhan had approached Ekadasi about ten years ago, seeking remedies for health problems affecting his family members.
Motivation Behind the Murder
Despite Ekadasi's treatments, Ghana lost his wife, mother, and grandson over the years. He developed a strong belief that the deceased was responsible for these deaths, as well as the loss of five of his cows. Harbouring deep suspicion and resentment, Ghana decided to take extreme action.
On April 12, Ghana and Pankaj found an opportunity when Ekadasi was alone at his betel field on the outskirts of Panchama village. They attacked him with a sharp weapon, causing excessive bleeding that led to his immediate death at the scene.
Police Response and Case Registration
A murder case was promptly registered at the Golanthara police station based on a report filed by the deceased's son, Sankar Nahak, on the same day as the incident. The investigation led to the arrest of the two suspects, who are now in custody facing serious charges.
This tragic event highlights ongoing issues related to superstition and violence in rural areas, underscoring the need for community awareness and legal intervention to prevent such crimes.
