Phagwara Police Crack Down on Drug Trafficking with Dual Arrests
In a significant enforcement action, the Phagwara police have apprehended two individuals in separate incidents under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The arrests, made during routine patrol and search operations, led to the seizure of narcotic capsules and heroin, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region.
First Arrest: Recovery of 90 Narcotic Capsules
A police team on patrol duty to monitor suspicious activities arrested Harbans Singh, also known as Bansa, a resident of Mohalla Mehtabgarh in Kapurthala. The incident occurred near Sacred Public School in Sukh Sagar Colony, where officers observed a youth approaching on foot. Upon noticing the police vehicle, the individual allegedly panicked, discarding a transparent polythene packet from his pants pocket onto the roadside before attempting to flee. He was swiftly overpowered by the police team.
Upon inspection, the packet was found to contain 90 unlabelled narcotic capsules. Following this discovery, Harbans Singh was taken into custody, and a case was registered under Sections 22, 61, and 85 of the NDPS Act. Authorities have emphasized that such proactive measures are crucial in curbing the spread of illicit substances in the area.
Second Arrest: Seizure of Six Grams of Heroin
In a separate operation, another police team registered a case under Sections 21, 61, and 85 of the NDPS Act. While on patrol near Phagrawal Gate, officers spotted a young man walking on foot. Similar to the first incident, the suspect allegedly threw a polythene packet from his pyjama pocket onto the roadside upon seeing the police and tried to escape. He was apprehended on the spot.
The accused identified himself as Kashmir Singh, alias Shera, from Hamira under the Subhanpur police station. A search of the discarded packet revealed six grams of heroin. Police officials have confirmed that further investigation is underway to uncover potential links to broader drug networks and ensure comprehensive legal action.
Ongoing Investigations and Community Impact
These arrests underscore the Phagwara police's commitment to maintaining law and order through vigilant patrols and targeted operations. The recovery of both narcotic capsules and heroin points to the diverse nature of drug trafficking activities in the region, necessitating continuous monitoring and enforcement.
Local authorities have urged residents to report any suspicious behavior, emphasizing community cooperation as a key component in the fight against drug abuse. The cases are being handled with strict adherence to legal protocols, with police officials assuring that all necessary steps will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
As investigations progress, the Phagwara police remain focused on disrupting drug supply chains and safeguarding public health. These efforts align with broader national initiatives to address substance abuse and promote a drug-free society.
