Tragic Kite-Chasing Incident Claims Lives of Two Boys in Mohali

In a heartbreaking incident that unfolded on Sunday evening in Mohali, two young boys lost their lives after being struck by a train while chasing a severed kite. The tragedy occurred around 5:30 PM near the Baltana railway crossing, sending shockwaves through the local community.

Details of the Fatal Accident

According to authorities, the victims were identified as Abhishek Kumar, aged 11, and Ayush, aged 13, both residents of Har Milap Nagar in Baltana. The boys, who were close friends and neighbours, were reportedly elated to see a kite that had been cut loose from its string. With the single-minded focus often seen among kite enthusiasts in the region, they chased after it, unaware of the impending danger.

Their pursuit led them directly onto the railway tracks, where an Ambala–Jalandhar DMU train was approaching. Despite the loco pilot noticing the boys running towards the tracks and repeatedly blowing the horn, they failed to respond in time. The train ultimately ran over both children, resulting in their tragic deaths.

Police Investigation and Response

Upon receiving information about the accident, police teams swiftly reached the spot. The bodies of the children were taken into custody and will be handed over to their families after a postmortem examination and completion of necessary formalities. Inspector Urmila Kumari, the SHO of Govt Railway Police (GRP), confirmed that proceedings under relevant legal provisions have been initiated. She added that the exact sequence of events is being verified as part of the ongoing investigation.

In a memo submitted at Chandigarh railway station, the loco pilot detailed his efforts to alert the boys, emphasizing that he blew the horn repeatedly but to no avail. The preliminary probe indicates that the children's eyes were fixed on the kite, causing them to overlook the approaching train.

Community Mourning and Safety Warnings

As residents of the area mourn the loss of two young lives, authorities have issued urgent warnings to parents and guardians. They are urging them to counsel children about the severe dangers of venturing near railway tracks. This incident highlights the critical need for increased awareness and preventive measures to avoid such tragedies in the future.

The local community has been left in deep sorrow, with many expressing condolences and calling for stricter safety protocols around railway crossings. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and education regarding railway safety, especially for children.
