In a tragic road accident on the Delhi-Lucknow National Highway in Uttar Pradesh's Hapur district, two cars collided head-on late Tuesday night, resulting in the deaths of at least five people and injuries to eight others. The incident occurred near the Pilkhuwa area, approximately 60 kilometers from Delhi.
How the Accident Happened
According to preliminary reports from the Hapur police, the accident took place around 11:30 PM when a speeding car heading towards Delhi lost control and rammed into an oncoming vehicle. The impact was so severe that both cars were mangled, and the occupants were trapped inside. Local residents rushed to the spot and alerted the police and ambulance services.
Circle Officer (CO) of Pilkhuwa, Rajesh Kumar Singh, confirmed the fatalities and injuries. "Five people have died on the spot, and eight injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals. The condition of two of the injured is critical," Singh said.
Victims and Rescue Operation
The deceased include three men and two women, all aged between 25 and 50. Their identities are yet to be established as many victims were from different states, likely traveling for work or family visits. The injured were taken to the Hapur District Hospital and a private nursing home in Pilkhuwa. A senior police officer said that one of the cars had a Bihar registration plate, while the other was from Uttar Pradesh.
Police and fire brigade teams reached the scene within minutes and used cutters to extract the trapped victims. The highway was clogged for over two hours as rescue operations continued. Traffic was diverted via service roads to ease congestion.
Injuries and Medical Response
Chief Medical Officer of Hapur, Dr. S.K. Verma, said that eight people were brought to the hospital with multiple fractures, head injuries, and internal bleeding. "Two patients are in the ICU and under observation. We have arranged for specialist doctors from nearby cities if needed," Dr. Verma added.
Among the injured, a 10-year-old girl and a 65-year-old man are in critical condition. Relatives of the victims have started arriving at the hospital, and police are coordinating with state transport authorities to trace family members.
Road Safety Concerns on National Highway
This accident adds to the growing number of road mishaps on the Delhi-Lucknow highway, a major route connecting the national capital with eastern Uttar Pradesh. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, over 25,000 road accidents occur on Indian national highways annually, with Uttar Pradesh accounting for the highest number of fatalities.
Local residents have long demanded better lighting, speed breakers, and installation of cameras along the Pilkhuwa stretch. "This area is notorious for accidents. The administration should take immediate steps to prevent such tragedies," said Amit Sharma, a local shopkeeper who witnessed the aftermath.
Official Response and Investigation
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep grief over the incident and directed officials to provide all possible assistance to the injured. The district administration has announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the seriously injured.
A forensic team has been deployed to examine the wreckage and determine the exact cause, including whether speeding or driver fatigue played a role. Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and a detailed report is awaited.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Hapur, Alok Singh, stated: "We are scanning CCTV footage from nearby toll booths to identify the drivers and track the vehicles' routes. Strict action will be taken against any negligence."
Community Mourning and Calls for Safety Measures
The tragic incident has left the local community in shock. A candlelight vigil was held near the accident site on Wednesday evening, with residents praying for the departed souls. Several social organizations have come forward to assist the injured.
"We urge the government to install crash barriers and reduce the speed limit in this zone. Such accidents can be avoided with proper infrastructure," said Pooja Gupta, a member of the Hapur Road Safety Initiative. Meanwhile, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has assured a safety audit of the stretch within a week.
