Double Tragedy on Chandigarh Roads
Chandigarh witnessed two heartbreaking road accidents within 24 hours that claimed the lives of a teenager and a middle-aged man, sending shockwaves through the city. The back-to-back tragedies have raised serious concerns about road safety in the union territory.
Police confirmed that 16-year-old Vivek Kumar lost his life in the early hours of Friday, while 40-year-old Dwarka Prasad Yadav died on Thursday afternoon in separate incidents that highlighted the vulnerability of two-wheeler riders on city roads.
Teenager's Joyride Ends in Tragedy
The first tragedy unfolded near the Sector-17 Cricket Stadium Chowk at approximately 5 am on Friday. Vivek Kumar, who worked at a dairy in Pinjore, was riding a motorcycle when he lost control and crashed into a footpath.
According to police investigations, two friends - Raju (17) and Rahul (18) - were riding pillion with Vivek at the time of the accident. The trio was returning from a late-night party, and critically, none of them were wearing helmets.
The impact caused serious injuries to both Vivek and Rahul, while Raju sustained minor injuries. Police immediately rushed all three to the Sector-16 hospital, where doctors declared Vivek dead upon arrival.
Investigations revealed that the motorcycle actually belonged to another friend named Karan, who had brought the group to Chandigarh the previous night, adding another layer of tragedy to the already devastating incident.
School Bus Collision Claims Life of Bread Seller
In the second fatal accident that occurred on Thursday afternoon, Dwarka Prasad Yadav, a 40-year-old resident of Mauli Charan Singh Colony, met with a tragic end. Yadav, who earned his living by selling bread and eggs from a cart, was riding his scooter toward Rajiv Colony Road in Mauli Jagran when disaster struck.
A private school bus collided with Yadav's scooter, causing critical injuries to the bread seller. Alert passersby immediately rushed the injured man to a nearby hospital, but despite their efforts and medical attention, doctors declared him dead.
In a concerning development, the bus driver fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle at the accident spot. Police confirmed that several students were inside the bus at the time of the collision but were safely sent home in another vehicle afterward.
Police Launch Investigations
Chandigarh police have seized both the school bus and the scooter involved in the second accident as evidence. Authorities have initiated raids to locate and apprehend the absconding bus driver, who faces serious charges for causing the fatal collision and then fleeing the scene.
In the case involving the teenage victims, police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the early morning crash. The back-to-back accidents have highlighted the urgent need for improved road safety measures and stricter enforcement of traffic rules, particularly regarding helmet usage and responsible driving.
These two separate incidents within 24 hours have left two families devastated and raised important questions about road safety protocols in the city, especially concerning young riders and the vulnerability of two-wheeler users sharing roads with larger vehicles.
