Two girls killed in Sivakasi wall collapse

A devastating accident in Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar district claimed the lives of two young cousins on Saturday morning. A nine-year-old girl and her four-year-old niece were killed when the iron gate they were playing on, along with the surrounding wall, suddenly collapsed in Sivakasi.

Details of the Heartbreaking Incident

The victims have been identified as Kamalika, daughter of Rajamani and Rajeshwari, and her cousin Rishika. According to the Sivakasi police, the tragic event occurred around 8 am on Saturday. The girls were playing near the entrance of their house, climbing on the iron gate, when the structure gave way.

Rajamani, Kamalika's father, works abroad, while her mother, Rajeshwari, serves as a head constable at the Sivakasi all-woman police station. Rishika, along with her mother Dhanalakshmi and brother, had come to Sivakasi from Aruppukkottai for a family vacation.

Rescue Efforts and Fatal Injuries

Hearing the children's cries, Dhanalakshmi rushed to the spot and, with the help of neighbours, managed to pull the girls from the rubble. Both children sustained severe head injuries and profuse bleeding. They were immediately taken to a nearby private hospital.

Due to the critical nature of their injuries, the girls were referred to the Sivakasi Government Hospital. Tragically, doctors at the government hospital pronounced them dead on arrival.

Legal Action and Aftermath

The Sivakasi police have registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS), which deals with causing death by negligence. After a postmortem examination was completed, the bodies of the two young girls were handed over to their grieving family.

This tragic incident in Virudhunagar district has highlighted the dangers of structural instability, especially for children at play. It serves as a somber reminder for homeowners to ensure the safety of their premises.
