Chaos Erupts at Muzaffarnagar Wedding as Two Grooms Arrive Simultaneously
A wedding ceremony in the Khatauli area of Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh, was abruptly halted on Tuesday after an unprecedented situation unfolded. Two separate grooms arrived at the bride's house with their respective wedding processions, or baraats, each adamantly claiming that he was the rightful groom set to marry the young woman.
Police and Child Helpline Intervene Over Minor Bride Allegations
The tense standoff escalated significantly when a concerned villager alerted the District Child Helpline, alleging that the bride might be a minor. This prompted immediate intervention by child protection officials and local police authorities, who rushed to the scene to assess the volatile situation.
According to police reports, the dispute originated when both prospective grooms—one traveling from Shamli district and the other from Meerut—reached the village with their elaborate wedding entourages. Each side insisted that the marriage had been formally fixed with their family, leading to heated arguments among the families and villagers.
"Both sides were vehemently claiming that the wedding had been finalised with them, and the atmosphere became extremely tense," stated a police officer who was present at the location. The confusion and conflicting claims created a spectacle that drew widespread attention in the rural community.
Age Verification Issues and Legal Proceedings Initiated
Sachin Kumar, the District Child Helpline coordinator, explained that his team, along with supervisor Bhubaneswar, promptly responded to the alert regarding a potential child marriage. "The family members were unable to produce any official documents verifying the girl's age," Kumar revealed. Consequently, the officials took the girl to a designated one-stop centre for her safety and further evaluation.
Kumar added, "She will be presented before the Child Welfare Committee for additional assistance and support." Authorities confirmed that a thorough medical examination would be conducted to accurately determine her age, as required under legal protocols to prevent underage marriages.
Father Reveals Conflicting Marriage Arrangements
The bride's father provided crucial details to the investigating police officers. He disclosed that his daughter's marriage had initially been arranged approximately six months ago with Pradeep Kumar, a 20-year-old resident of Babri village in Shamli district. However, a tragic event occurred on Monday, just one day before the scheduled wedding, when Pradeep Kumar's brother passed away.
The grieving groom's family informed the bride's side that they would communicate whether the wedding ceremony would proceed as planned or be postponed. "They assured us they would confirm the ceremony's status, but we never received any final message or decision," the father recounted, highlighting the communication breakdown that led to the subsequent confusion.
Last-Minute Arrangement Triggers Dual Groom Scenario
With wedding preparations already in full swing and uncertainty looming, the bride's family hastily arranged another match on Monday evening. They fixed the marriage with Akash, a resident of Diggi village under the Medical police station limits in Meerut district. This decision set the stage for the chaotic events that unfolded on Tuesday.
As both Pradeep Kumar and Akash arrived with their separate baraats on the wedding day, arguments erupted between the families, and widespread confusion gripped the entire village. The unprecedented situation required police intervention to maintain order and prevent any potential violence.
Police Action and Ongoing Investigation
SHO Dinesh Chand of Khatauli police station confirmed that police personnel swiftly reached the location after receiving reports of the commotion and unrest. "Our team provided necessary assistance to the Child Helpline officials, and the girl was safely transported to the one-stop centre," Chand stated. He emphasized that further legal actions would be pursued in accordance with established procedures and regulations.
The incident has raised significant questions about marriage practices, child protection laws, and family communications in rural Uttar Pradesh. Authorities continue to investigate the matter thoroughly to ensure justice and compliance with legal standards.
