New Delhi: Two people sustained injuries after a bottle containing an acid-like substance burst open inside a car in southeast Delhi's Shaheen Bagh on Tuesday evening.
Incident Details
According to the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), a call regarding a 'car fire' was received around 5:04 pm. Two fire tenders were dispatched to the spot. Upon arrival, officials discovered that there was no fire; instead, a bottle stored inside the vehicle had burst, releasing toxic fumes.
A DFS official stated, 'The two passengers in the car inhaled the fumes and lost consciousness.' The victims were identified as Anil, 42, and Jyotsana, 42. They were immediately rushed to the AIIMS trauma centre.
Medical Condition
Anil has suffered 18% burn injuries, while Jyotsana is on ventilator support, according to police sources. The severity of their conditions underscores the hazardous nature of the substance involved.
Possible Cause
Investigations suggest that Anil owns a pharmacy, which may have given him access to the chemical bottle. A senior police officer noted this possibility, indicating that the substance might have been acquired for legitimate purposes but led to this unfortunate incident.
Authorities are continuing their inquiry to determine the exact nature of the substance and the circumstances surrounding the burst. The area was cordoned off briefly to ensure public safety, and no further injuries were reported.
