Dibrugarh: Two persons were injured in police firing in the Bogidol area of Sivasagar district on Monday evening after they allegedly attempted to collect extortion money on behalf of the banned outfit Ulfa-I.
Incident Details
The two injured persons, identified as Ritu Gogoi and Jitumoni Gogoi, along with four others, were travelling on three motorcycles to collect extortion money from local businessman Lachit Gogoi. The group was intercepted by police based on a tip-off.
Police Response
Sivasagar Superintendent of Police Papori Chetia stated, We had been tracking this racket for some time and positioned a team on the road after receiving a tip. When police signalled the group to stop, they allegedly opened fire on the officers. The police team retaliated, resulting in Ritu Gogoi sustaining three bullet injuries and Jitumoni Gogoi being hit by a single bullet. The other four suspects managed to flee the scene.
Injuries to Police Personnel
Two police personnel were also injured in the scuffle that ensued during the operation. They are reported to be stable and receiving medical treatment.

The police had been monitoring the activities of this extortion racket for some time. The involvement of the banned insurgent group Ulfa-I highlights ongoing security challenges in the region.
