Tragic Bus Accident in Kanyakumari Claims Two Lives

A devastating road accident in Kanyakumari district resulted in the deaths of two individuals on Monday morning. A private omni bus, traveling from Bengaluru to Kollam via Nagercoil, met with a catastrophic accident near Thuckalay, plunging into a roadside canal after colliding with two two-wheelers.

Sequence of the Fatal Crash

According to police sources, the bus reached the Kumarakovil area near Thuckalay during the early hours. The driver, identified as Sibil, a 36-year-old from Trivandrum, reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The speeding bus first violently swerved and rammed into two oncoming two-wheelers before breaking through the boundary and overturning into an adjacent canal.

Victims Identified as Painters

The two deceased have been identified as Vijay, aged 28, and his maternal uncle Suresh Kumar, aged 42. Both were traveling on a separate two-wheeler and were on their way to Nagercoil for painting work. Tragically, they were killed on the spot due to the impact of the collision.

Rescue and Investigation Efforts

Police and fire safety personnel rushed to the scene immediately. They successfully rescued all the passengers who were trapped inside the overturned bus. The two bodies were recovered and sent to Kanyakumari Government Medical College Hospital for autopsy procedures.

Remarkably, all passengers on the bus escaped unhurt in the accident. Police noted that since the bus was a sleeper coach, the passengers were likely in a more protected position during the crash.

Initial Findings Point to Driver Fatigue

The Thuckalay police have registered a case and are conducting a thorough investigation. Initial investigations suggest that the accident may have occurred because the driver fell asleep at the wheel, leading to a loss of control over the vehicle. This highlights critical concerns about driver fatigue and road safety on long-distance routes.

This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and stricter enforcement of driving regulations to prevent such fatal accidents in the future.
