A 60-year-old woman and a 19-year-old youth were killed in two separate hit-and-run incidents in Chatra district since late Friday, police said.
Woman killed during morning walk
Kanti Devi, 60, was out on her morning walk when a speeding truck crushed her to death near the gate of Hunterganj police station around 6 am on Saturday. Mother of a local functionary of the Congress party, Kanti was dragged by the truck for nearly 200 feet before the vehicle came to a halt. She was killed on the spot. The driver fled the scene with the truck.
Angry locals blocked NH-22 for two hours seeking arrest of the absconding driver and compensation for Kanti's family members. Prabhat Kumar, the officer-in-charge of Hunterganj police station, said, "The truck has been identified and will be seized too. Efforts are on to arrest the driver as well."
Youth killed in second incident
On Friday, 19-year-old Mohammad Rehan Afridi was killed after his motorbike was hit by a speeding pick-up van on the Chatra-Itkhori main road near Tapej. Afridi, a resident of Mufti Colony in Azad Nagar, was returning from Hazaribag.
