Tragic Hit-and-Run Claims Two Lives in West Delhi
A devastating hit-and-run incident in West Delhi's Zakhira Gol Chakkar has claimed the lives of two individuals - a peanut vendor and a painter - sending shockwaves through the local community. The tragic event occurred on Wednesday evening around 6:10 PM, with both victims succumbing to their injuries during treatment on Thursday.
Details of the Fatal Collision
According to Moti Nagar police officials, the sequence of events began when Mani Raj, 48, was crossing the road at Zakhira Gol Chakkar while returning home from work. The painter was accompanied by his friend, Jagdish, when a speeding car struck him without warning.
The vehicle then crashed into the Gol Chakkar before the driver attempted to flee the scene. In his desperate escape attempt, the motorist turned left but instead collided with Surajpal, 74, who was operating his peanut cart at the location. The impact left both pedestrians with critical injuries that would later prove fatal.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
Police authorities confirmed that by the time they reached the accident site, both injured men had already been transported to Acharya Shree Bhikshu Government Hospital. The car involved in the incident was found abandoned at the collision site, with the driver having completely disappeared from the scene.
Investigators have seized the vehicle and collected medico-legal reports as part of their ongoing investigation. The police managed to record the statement of Jagdish, who witnessed the entire accident, though both victims were declared unfit for questioning before their unfortunate demise.
The absence of CCTV cameras in the area has significantly hampered the investigation, making it difficult for authorities to trace the accused's escape route. However, police have successfully traced the vehicle owner through registration details and have notified them to provide a statement.
Initially, the police registered an FIR under sections 281 (rash or negligent driving) and 125(a) (act endangering life and personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Following the deaths of both victims, Section 106 (causing death by negligence) was added to the case.
Medical authorities initially treated the victims at Acharya Shree Bhikshu Government Hospital before referring them to a higher medical center. Their families subsequently moved them to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where they eventually passed away during treatment on Thursday.
