Balangir: Two mechanics, who took out a luxury car for a joyride, died on the spot after they rammed the vehicle, likely running at 160kmph speed, into a truck parked on Bhawanipatna bypass road under Sadar police limits in Kalahandi district late on Friday night.
Pintu Bag, 20, a resident of Titilagarh in Balangir district, and Gautam Naik, 24, of Dharamgarh in Kalahandi district, were mechanics at a garage in Dharamgarh.
According to police, the duo allegedly took the BMW out without informing the owner. The vehicle owner reportedly learned about the incident only after the crash and later arrived at the accident site.
"According to preliminary information, the car was travelling from Dharamgarh towards Bhawanipatna, when it crashed into the rear of the stranded truck," said Mamata Hembram, inspector in charge of Bhawanipatna Sadar police station.
The local residents who rushed to the scene found the car mangled beyond recognition and discovered that both the occupants had died. Police later recovered the bodies and sent them for postmortem.
Sources said Naik was allegedly driving the car at an extremely high speed. Following the crash, the speedometer was reportedly found stuck at around 160kmph.
Bhawanipatna Sadar police station registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.
Police said whether the two occupants were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident could be ascertained only after a thorough investigation.
