Dibrugarh: Two pistols were recovered from near the railway track at Banipur, close to the Dibrugarh railway station, prompting an investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies.
According to railway police officials, passers-by spotted the firearms lying beside the tracks in the morning and alerted authorities. One of the pistols was found tightly wrapped in black polythene, while the other was lying in the open. The unwrapped weapon bore an engraving reading “Italy Made,” officials said.
Soon after the recovery, a joint team comprising personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP) and Assam Police reached the location and seized both pistols for further examination.
Officials suspect that the weapons may have been deliberately abandoned by an unidentified person, possibly to avoid detection during transit through the railway station area.
“We are examining all angles, including the possibility that these arms were being smuggled through the rail route. We are reviewing CCTV footage from the station and surrounding areas to identify any suspects,” an RPF official said.
The pistols recovered from near the rail tracks have been sent for forensic analysis. Authorities are also checking if the weapons are linked to any criminal case.
