Kalaburagi city police commissioner Sharanappa SD has issued an order suspending two employees, Jyoti (a woman head constable) and Shivsharanappa (an Assistant Sub-Inspector), from Station Bazar police station following an inquiry related to a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case.
Allegations of Bribery
According to the inquiry, the two officers allegedly demanded and accepted a bribe from the complainant in the POCSO case. The suspension was imposed pending further investigation into the claims. Jyoti and Shivsharanappa, who were serving as investigative assistants, had called the complainant to the police station regarding the victim's statement in the case registered at Station Bazar police station.
They are accused of demanding Rs 10,000 from the complainant. It is further alleged that a bribe of Rs 9,000 was accepted as part of the demand.
Lokayukta Raid
On June 7, the Karnataka Lokayukta police conducted a raid at the police station and caught both policemen red-handed while accepting the bribe. The suspension order was issued in light of these findings and to ensure a fair and transparent investigation.
The action underscores the commitment of the police department to maintain integrity and accountability among its personnel, especially in sensitive cases involving the protection of children.
