Tragic Road Accidents Claim Lives of Two Elderly Pedestrians in Goa
In a distressing series of events, two senior citizens lost their lives in separate road accidents in North Goa over the weekend. The incidents, which occurred just hours apart, have highlighted concerns over road safety and reckless driving in the region.
First Incident: Fatal Collision Near Saligao Church
The first tragedy unfolded on Friday evening near Saligao church. Margaret Rodrigues, an 85-year-old woman, was crossing the road when she was struck by a speeding tourist taxi. The accident occurred between 6:00 AM and 6:30 AM, according to police reports.
Rodrigues sustained severe injuries and was immediately rushed to the North Goa District Hospital in Mapusa for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries on Saturday afternoon, leaving the local community in mourning.
In response to the incident, the police have registered an offence against Vasant Shirodkar, a 56-year-old resident of Dias Vaddo, Nagoa. The case has been filed under Section 281 and Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act, 2023, which pertain to rash driving and causing death by negligence.
Second Incident: Pedestrian Struck at Siolim
In a separate but equally tragic accident, Prahlad Kumar Raitani, a 75-year-old man, was fatally injured after being hit by a speeding car at Siolim. The incident occurred early Friday morning near the SBI Bank, close to the Siolim bridge.
According to police investigations, Raitani was walking along the left side of the road toward the bridge when a car struck him from behind. The impact caused severe head injuries, and he was promptly transported to the Goa Medical College (GMC) in Bambolim for treatment.
Tragically, Raitani, a native of Kanpur who was currently residing in Siolim, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday. The Anjuna police have filed a case against the accused driver, Alaa Y M Almadhan, a 43-year-old resident of Morjim.
Initially charged with rash driving, the case was escalated following a wireless message on Saturday confirming Raitani's death. Additional charges under Section 106(1) for causing death by negligence have been added to the complaint.
Police Response and Legal Actions
Authorities in North Goa have taken swift action in both cases, emphasizing the seriousness of the offences. The registration of cases under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act underscores the legal ramifications for negligent driving resulting in fatalities.
