Two women from the Banapur area of Khurda district were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Capital Hospital in critical condition on Sunday evening after they allegedly attempted to end their lives by consuming poison at Lower PMG in Bhubaneswar.
Incident Details
The women have been identified as Manasi Behera and Bigyani Panda, both in their 40s. According to police reports, three women, including Behera and Panda, were protesting at the designated dharna site at Lower PMG, demanding a resolution to a long-standing land dispute.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jagmohan Meena stated, “When they were on dharna, our personnel were present as it is a designated protest site. Banapur police were called to take them back and resolve their issue.” Before they were preparing to leave, the women went to the public toilet and there they allegedly consumed poison, the DCP added.
Police Response
Upon receiving information, police personnel rushed the women to Capital Hospital, where they were admitted to the ICU. Their condition remains critical, and medical staff are providing necessary treatment. The police have registered a case and are investigating the matter further.
The incident has raised concerns about the handling of protest situations and the mental state of the protesters. Authorities are looking into the circumstances that led to the drastic step.
