Greater Noida: Two workers lost their lives on Thursday after falling from the 37th floor of an under-construction residential tower in Sector 152, Greater Noida. The incident occurred when the shuttering platform they were working on collapsed, and their safety belts allegedly failed, according to police.
Accident Details
The deceased have been identified as Raisul Haque (24) and Abdul Samad (45), both hailing from Cooch Behar district in West Bengal. At around 12:45 pm, they were engaged in removing shuttering at Tower 23 of the ATS Picturesque Reprieve project when the platform suddenly gave way.
Although both workers were secured with individual safety belts, the belts snapped during the fall, causing them to plunge from a significant height, a police officer said. The workers sustained severe head injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital by colleagues and project staff, but they succumbed to their injuries during treatment.
Police Investigation
The accident triggered panic at the construction site. A team from Knowledge Park police station arrived promptly, inspected the site, and initiated legal proceedings. The bodies have been sent for autopsy, and family members have been informed.
Police are investigating possible safety lapses, including whether all mandatory workplace measures and construction protocols were being followed. The role of the contractor, site supervisors, and project management is under scrutiny. A case has been registered against the builder under Section 106 of the BNS for causing death by negligence, based on a complaint filed by a relative of one of the workers.
Officials stated that the inquiry will focus on the circumstances leading to the platform collapse, the condition of safety equipment, and compliance with labour and workplace safety regulations.
Developer's Response
In a statement, the developer expressed grief over the deaths, noting that both workers had been deployed through a labour contractor. “We are deeply saddened by the tragic accident that resulted in the loss of two precious lives. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families,” the company said.
The developer assured compensation to the families in addition to statutory insurance benefits and workmen’s compensation. It maintained that safety protocols and industry practices had been followed at its project sites. “We have initiated a comprehensive internal inquiry to determine the exact cause of the accident and are cooperating fully with the local authorities,” the statement added.
An officer remarked that further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing inquiry into what turned a routine high-altitude assignment into a fatal fall.
