Major Highway Accident in Udaipur Leaves Six Injured After Tanker Collision
A severe chain collision unfolded on the Udaipur-Chittorgarh national highway on Thursday afternoon, causing significant disruption and injuries. An out-of-control tanker crashed into more than a dozen vehicles, resulting in six persons sustaining injuries and creating a massive traffic jam that lasted for hours.
Details of the Debari Highway Crash
The accident occurred in front of a power house on the Debari highway, a busy stretch connecting Udaipur and Chittorgarh. Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker was speeding uncontrollably before it collided with a series of vehicles, including four to five cars, several loading tempos, and a motorcycle. The impact was so severe that it left a trail of damaged vehicles and debris across the road.
Pratap Nagar police swiftly responded to the scene and transported all six injured individuals to MB Hospital in Udaipur for medical treatment. Among the injured, one person is reported to be in critical condition, raising concerns about the severity of the crash. The police have confirmed that the injuries range from minor to serious, with ongoing medical assessments at the hospital.
Police Investigation and Suspected Causes
SHO Puran Singh Rajpurohit provided insights into the preliminary investigation, revealing that brake failure is being considered as a potential cause for the tanker's loss of control. "The initial findings point to mechanical issues with the tanker's braking system, which led to the catastrophic collision," Rajpurohit stated. He added that the tanker driver fled the scene immediately after the accident, prompting a manhunt by local authorities to locate and apprehend the individual.
The police are also examining other factors, such as speeding and road conditions, to determine the full scope of the incident. This crash has highlighted ongoing safety concerns on national highways, particularly regarding heavy vehicle maintenance and driver accountability.
Eyewitness Accounts and Near-Miss Incidents
Eyewitnesses and victims shared harrowing stories of the near-miss moments during the collision. Manmeet Kundra, who was driving towards a construction site in his electric vehicle, described the terrifying experience. "I noticed the uncontrolled tanker approaching rapidly in my rearview mirror. Despite my best efforts to steer clear, it collided with my vehicle, completely destroying my car," Kundra recounted.
Fortunately, Kundra and two other occupants in his vehicle escaped without life-threatening injuries, though they were shaken by the ordeal. Other witnesses reported similar close calls, emphasizing the chaotic and sudden nature of the crash that left many scrambling for safety.
Earlier Incident on the Same Highway
Earlier in the day, prior to the chain collision, a separate incident involving a chemical tanker had occurred near the same spot on the Debari highway. That tanker had overturned, spilling chemicals onto the road. Police and fire department personnel quickly moved the tanker aside and washed off the spilled chemical using a fire tender to prevent further hazards.
This earlier incident may have contributed to traffic disruptions and heightened alertness among drivers, though it is unclear if it directly influenced the subsequent chain collision. Authorities are reviewing both events to assess any potential connections or patterns in highway safety issues in the area.
Key Points from the Accident:- The chain collision involved over a dozen vehicles, including cars, tempos, and a motorcycle.
- Six people were injured, with one in critical condition at MB Hospital.
- Police suspect brake failure as the primary cause and are hunting for the fleeing tanker driver.
- Eyewitnesses reported the tanker was speeding uncontrollably before the crash.
- An earlier chemical tanker overturn occurred on the same highway, adding to the day's disruptions.
The Udaipur-Chittorgarh national highway remains a critical route for transportation, and this incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and regular vehicle inspections to prevent such tragedies in the future.
