Tragedy Strikes During Student Trek Near Chennai Firing Range

A routine trek turned deadly for a group of engineering students near Chennai on Monday when an unexploded ordnance detonated, killing one student and injuring four others. The incident occurred near the Anumanthapuram firing range in Singaperumal Koil, highlighting serious safety concerns in areas used by security forces.

Fatal Encounter with Unexploded Ordnance

According to police reports, the tragedy unfolded around 5:30 PM when six students from SRM Engineering College climbed a hill adjacent to the firing range without proper authorization. The group, traveling on three two-wheelers, reached the hilltop where they encountered what appeared to be an iron object later identified as unexploded ordnance.

In a moment of tragic curiosity, one of the students kicked the object, causing it to detonate upon impact with a rock. The explosion created immediate chaos, with shrapnel and debris flying in all directions.

Casualties and Immediate Aftermath

The deceased has been identified as Emansu Yadav, 21, a fourth-year electrical and electronics engineering student. Yadav, the son of Ramesh Singh who works in Air Force quarters in Bengaluru, sustained fatal injuries to his chest, shoulder, and arm, succumbing to his wounds at the scene.

Four other students suffered significant injuries:

  • Vishal Venugopal, 21, a fourth-year mechanical engineering student from Hyderabad, sustained severe damage to the fingers and hand of his left arm
  • Aryan Sharma, 21, from Uttar Pradesh received injuries
  • Krishna Siraj Mahajan, 21, from Jammu was wounded
  • Nishkas Niraj, 21, from New Delhi sustained injuries

Remarkably, one student—Virat Sanjay Kumar, 23, from Meerut—escaped the explosion without any physical harm. All injured students were promptly transported to SRM Hospital in Potheri via ambulance, where they are currently undergoing medical treatment.

Police Investigation and Safety Concerns

Singaperumal Koil police have registered a formal case and launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident. Senior police officers visited the accident site to examine the scene and gather evidence.

Police officials noted that the area is regularly used for firing practice by various security forces, leading them to suspect the explosive device was an unexploded shell left behind from previous exercises. The investigation aims to determine how such a dangerous device remained at the location and whether proper safety protocols were followed in securing the area after training exercises.

This tragic event raises serious questions about safety measures in and around military training areas, particularly regarding the clearance of unexploded ordnance. The investigation continues as authorities work to establish the complete sequence of events and identify any lapses in safety procedures that may have contributed to this preventable tragedy.
