UP ATS Probes Espionage Network After Navy Sailor's Arrest

UP Anti-Terror Squad Investigates Extensive Espionage Network Following Navy Sailor's Arrest

The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) is conducting a comprehensive investigation into a potentially wider espionage network, following the arrest of a 24-year-old Indian navy sailor accused of spying for Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). This development comes just one day after the initial arrest, with authorities now examining whether more navy personnel of similar rank may have been targeted using identical honey-trap tactics on social media platforms.

Details of the Alleged Espionage Operation

The accused, a resident of Agra district, was apprehended by the ATS on March 10. He stands accused of sharing highly sensitive information concerning Indian naval assets with a handler directly linked to Pakistan's premier intelligence agency. Officials have revealed that the sailor was allegedly honey-trapped nearly three years ago through a Facebook profile named "Angel," which investigators believe was operated by an ISI-linked handler.

According to ATS sources, the online interaction began as a casual conversation in 2023 but progressively evolved into a close virtual relationship. The handler reportedly gained the sailor's trust over time, eventually persuading him to disclose specific details about his naval posting and professional responsibilities.

Sensitive Information and Digital Evidence Recovered

The arrested sailor was serving as a leading sailor at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi, Kerala. During the investigation, authorities recovered substantial digital evidence indicating he had shared photographs and critical information related to Indian naval assets, including images of warships.

"Such material is considered highly sensitive as it can potentially reveal operational and logistical details about defence infrastructure," emphasized an official involved in the case. The nature of the shared information raises significant security concerns regarding the protection of naval assets and strategic operations.

Financial Transactions and Surveillance Operation

Investigators are also scrutinizing financial transactions between the accused and the suspected handler. The ATS is examining whether monetary incentives played a role in the espionage activities, adding another layer to the ongoing probe.

The sailor had been under ATS surveillance for approximately two months prior to his arrest. When he took leave and returned to his hometown in Agra, the ATS unit became active and apprehended him from Cheetpur. He was subsequently transported to the ATS headquarters in Lucknow for further interrogation.

Judicial Proceedings and Ongoing Analysis

Based on prima facie evidence recovered from his mobile phone and bank accounts, the sailor was formally arrested. He was produced before a court and has been sent to judicial custody. Currently, forensic teams are meticulously analyzing his electronic devices, communication records, and financial trails to build a stronger case and uncover additional connections.

Potential for a Broader Network

A critical aspect of the investigation focuses on whether the suspected handler approached or entrapped other navy personnel using similar social media profiles and honey-trap techniques. The ATS is exploring the possibility that this case might represent just one node in a more extensive espionage network targeting Indian defence personnel.

This incident highlights the evolving threats in the digital age, where social media platforms can be exploited for intelligence gathering and compromising national security. The investigation remains active as authorities work to determine the full scope of the espionage activities and identify any other individuals who may have been compromised.
