UP Police Constable Arrested in Agra Suicide Case, Woman Alleges Harassment

A Uttar Pradesh police constable has been arrested on charges of abetment of suicide following the tragic death of a woman in Agra, who allegedly took her own life after accusing him of mental harassment and breaking a promise to marry her.

Background of the Deceased and Relationship Details

The deceased woman, who had completed a fashion design course from a college in Lucknow, was married six years ago, but the relationship lasted only two years. The couple had a child, who currently resides with the husband. Due to differences, she had been living separately.

Approximately four years ago, she attended a program in Shamsabad where she met constable JB Gautam, a 2019-batch policeman. The two became friends, and according to allegations, the constable later called her to meet him. Their meetings increased, and he allegedly promised to marry her.

Events Leading to the Tragic Incident

The woman's sister lives in Agra, and whenever she visited, she would also stay at the constable's flat in the Tajganj area. A few days ago, the constable allegedly refused to marry her, which left her deeply distressed. His family members were also accused of harassing her.

On Wednesday, the woman came to her sister's house and went into another room. In the evening, her sister went to the gym while her brother-in-law left for work. The woman locked the room from inside. When her sister returned, she knocked on the door but heard loud music playing, assuming the woman was listening to songs and went to sleep.

Later at night, when the music continued, she became suspicious and knocked again but received no response. She then looked through a window above the door and saw the woman hanging from a noose. Shocked, she raised an alarm and informed the police immediately.

Police Investigation and Arrest

Police received information about the young woman's suicide on the night of March 12 within the jurisdiction of Sadar Bazar police station. Upon arrival, personnel conducted necessary legal proceedings, prepared an inquest report, and sent the body for postmortem.

Based on a written complaint submitted by the deceased's father at Sadar Bazar police station, a case was registered under relevant sections. Computer operator Jantar Babu alias J.B. Gautam was arrested and sent to judicial custody. Departmental proceedings have been initiated against him, and he has been suspended from duty.

Key Evidence: Videos Recorded Before Death

ACP Sadar Imran Ahmed revealed that the woman recorded two videos, each about one minute long, before her death. In these videos, she spoke about her relationship with the constable and alleged exploitation, stating she was under severe stress. She had sent the videos to several relatives.

The family informed the police about the videos on Thursday morning, after which the woman's mobile phone was seized. Investigators are examining when the videos were recorded and to whom they were sent. The phone will be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for further examination to gather more evidence in the case.

This incident highlights serious allegations of harassment and broken promises, leading to a tragic outcome, with ongoing police investigations to ensure justice.
