FIR Registered After 11 Months in UP Jail Custody Death Case Following Court Intervention
In a significant development, an FIR was registered on Thursday, nearly 11 months after the death of a 38-year-old man in jail custody in Uttar Pradesh's Ambedkar Nagar district. The action came following court intervention, which took cognisance of the prolonged delay and directed the police to initiate legal proceedings.
Details of the Case and Charges Filed
The FIR names several individuals, including the then Station House Officer (SHO) of Mahrua, the jail superintendent, police officers involved in the arrest of the deceased, Ajay Kumar, and a local person. All have been booked under charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations in this custodial death incident.
Background of the Incident and Arrest
According to statements from Ajay Kumar's mother, the events leading to his death began with a phone argument between Ajay and a man named Anil Kumar. The conversation was allegedly recorded and went viral, prompting police action. Based on this, Ajay was picked up by the police on March 29 last year. He was produced in court on the same day and subsequently sent to judicial custody.
Death and Aftermath: Family's Struggle for Justice
On March 30, the family was informed that Ajay had fallen ill and was admitted to a hospital. However, when they reached the hospital, police informed them that his body was already in the mortuary. The family discovered serious injury marks on the body, raising immediate concerns about the circumstances of his death.
Despite submitting multiple complaints to the then circle officer and later to the Superintendent of Police (SP), no FIR was registered initially, leading to frustration and a prolonged wait for justice. The court's intervention has now brought this case back into the spotlight, emphasizing the need for accountability in custodial matters.
