Two UP Police Personnel Arrested for Duping Retired Army Man of Rs 15 Lakh
In a shocking case of corruption within the police force, two personnel posted at the Deoria Superintendent of Police office in Uttar Pradesh have been arrested for allegedly cheating a retired army man of Rs 15 lakh. The accused, identified as stenographer Afzal Khan and constable Deepak Singh, were sent to judicial custody on Sunday following a formal complaint by the victim.
How the Elaborate Scam Unfolded
The case came to light after retired soldier Prashant Kumar Dwivedi, a resident of Rampur Dubey village in the Mahuadih police station area, filed a detailed complaint. According to official statements, Dwivedi had prior acquaintance with the two policemen who exploited his trust after his retirement in 2019.
The accused promised to secure Dwivedi a government job and demanded Rs 15 lakh as payment for their services. Trusting their position in the police department, Dwivedi went to extreme lengths to arrange the money, even mortgaging his house to meet their demands.
Seven Years of Broken Promises and Intimidation
Despite handing over the substantial amount, Dwivedi did not receive the promised government job even after nearly seven years. When he began demanding his money back, the situation took a disturbing turn.
The policemen allegedly used their official position to intimidate Dwivedi, threatening to implicate him in false criminal cases if he continued pursuing the matter. This abuse of authority created a climate of fear that prevented the victim from coming forward earlier.
During the repayment dispute, constable Deepak Singh's wife reportedly issued a cheque for Rs 1 lakh to Dwivedi as partial repayment. However, this cheque later bounced, adding insult to injury for the retired soldier who had already suffered significant financial loss.
Investigation and Legal Action
Dwivedi eventually approached the Superintendent of Police with his complaint, submitting the bounced cheque as crucial evidence. After a preliminary investigation found merit in the allegations, the SP ordered the registration of a formal case against the accused policemen.
Kotwali Station House Officer Rakesh Rai confirmed that both Afzal Khan and Deepak Singh have been remanded to judicial custody following their arrest. The case highlights serious concerns about corruption within law enforcement agencies and the vulnerability of retired service personnel to such exploitation.
The incident raises important questions about:
- Internal accountability mechanisms within police departments
- Protection for citizens against official intimidation
- Financial security for retired military personnel
- Effectiveness of grievance redressal systems
This case serves as a stark reminder of how positions of authority can be misused for personal gain, undermining public trust in law enforcement institutions. The judicial process will now determine the final outcome, but the damage to the victim's finances and faith in the system has already been substantial.
