Uttar Pradesh's Policing Revolution: A Nine-Year Transformation
Over the past nine years, Uttar Pradesh has undergone a comprehensive overhaul in its policing framework, characterized by stricter enforcement, deep technological integration, and a decisive shift towards citizen-centric approaches. This transformation has fundamentally altered law and order in the state, moving from reactive measures to proactive, data-driven strategies.
Measurable Gains and Strategic Evolution
In an exclusive interview, UP Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna highlighted the tangible outcomes of this policing revolution. The results on the ground are both measurable and lasting, he emphasized, attributing the success to the unwavering political will and zero-tolerance policy of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Key achievements include:
- Seizure or liberation of illegally acquired properties valued at over ₹4,413 crore from mafia and criminal elements.
- Under Operation Conviction, more than one lakh accused were sentenced between July 2023 and March 2026, demonstrating enhanced judicial efficiency.
Technology as a Force Multiplier
The integration of advanced technology has been pivotal. DGP Krishna explained that effective policing is not a choice between human effort and technological tools but a synthesis of both. The UP Police now deploys a blend of traditional foot patrolling and AI-powered surveillance systems.
Notable technological upgrades include:
- YAKSH App: An AI-based platform that unifies multiple legacy systems into a single investigative tool, enabling officers to identify suspects, map gang networks, and solve cases in hours rather than days.
- National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS): This has strengthened forensic capabilities by allowing instant fingerprint matching across a national database.
- Operation Trinetra: A decisive initiative that has emerged as a force multiplier in crime control, leveraging data analytics for predictive policing.
Citizen-Centric Policing and Emergency Response
Crime prevention has been significantly enhanced through citizen-centric approaches. The UP-112 emergency response system, increased surveillance, and AI-based tools have drastically reduced response times and improved crime detection rates. The police force now prioritizes:
- Transparency in operations
- Women's safety initiatives
- Cybercrime prevention measures
This ensures that policing remains responsive, inclusive, and prepared for future challenges. A partnership with Meta on AI-based suicide prevention uses distress signals to trigger timely on-ground interventions, showcasing innovative applications of technology.
Crowd Control and Public Safety Strategies
The UP Police have adapted their strategies for effective crowd control while maintaining public safety. The approach is built on anticipation, real-time monitoring, and calibrated responses. The most powerful demonstration of this strategy was during the Maha Kumbh 2025, where the police operationalized a command and control center that served as the nerve center for the entire event, ensuring smooth management of massive crowds.
DGP Krishna concluded that the transformation of UP's policing is a testament to how a blend of political will, technological innovation, and human engagement can redefine law enforcement, making it more efficient, accountable, and trusted by citizens.
