US Alleges Punjab Cop Aided Gangster in Extortion, Seeks Extradition
US Alleges Punjab Cop Helped Gangster Extortion Network

The United States has alleged that a Punjab police officer assisted jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria in operating a transnational extortion network, and is seeking the officer's extradition from India. US prosecutors claim that Bhagwanpuria's gang corrupted law enforcement officers and partnered with government officials to carry out extortion schemes.

Allegations of Corruption and Extortion

According to court documents filed in the US, the gangster's network extended beyond India, targeting victims in the United States and Canada. The US Department of Justice alleges that the Punjab police officer provided sensitive information and protection to the gang in exchange for bribes. The officer's identity has not been publicly disclosed.

Extradition Request and Legal Proceedings

The US has formally requested India to extradite the officer, citing a bilateral extradition treaty. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs is reviewing the request. Legal experts say the case could set a precedent for cross-border cooperation in tackling organized crime.
