Vadodara School Murder: Juvenile Offender Sentenced to Life Imprisonment as Adult
A special children's court in Vadodara, Gujarat, has delivered a landmark verdict, sentencing a man to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of a junior student in 2018. The tragic incident occurred at a school in Vadodara's Baranpura area. The victim, Dev Tadvi, had been enrolled for just two days when he was fatally attacked. According to court records, the accused stabbed Tadvi repeatedly in the head and chest in the school washroom, leading to his immediate death. Staff members who rushed to the scene upon hearing screams found Tadvi lying in a pool of blood, while the accused was seen fleeing with a knife.
Legal Proceedings and Adult Trial
The trial was conducted in the special children's court, presided over by Additional Sessions Judge Shakuntala Solanki. The court examined 20 witnesses, including eyewitnesses and forensic experts, and reviewed 42 pieces of documentary evidence before reaching its verdict. Initially, the accused was lodged in a zonal observation home but was transferred to Vadodara Central Jail in 2023 after turning 21.
The Juvenile Justice Board had earlier ordered that the accused be tried as an adult, citing his mental and physical capacity to understand the consequences of his actions. The court noted that the accused had pre-planned the murder, carrying pepper powder and a knife as part of his preparation, which demonstrated a clear intent and awareness of the crime.

As per the prosecution, the motive behind the murder stemmed from an incident two days prior, where the accused had been reprimanded by a teacher. In response, he allegedly planned the murder with the aim of shutting down the school, randomly targeting Tadvi as his victim. The accused was subsequently charged under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 135 of the Gujarat Police Act.
