Student Fatally Shot on Varanasi College Campus, Senior Accused Escapes
A tragic incident unfolded at Udai Pratap Autonomous College in Varanasi on Friday afternoon, resulting in the death of a 23-year-old student. The victim, identified as Surya Pratap Singh, a fourth-semester BS Mathematics student hailing from Ghazipur, was allegedly shot by a senior student on campus.
Details of the Shooting Incident
According to initial reports, the shooting occurred in the corridor of the Social Science faculty building. The accused, Manjeet Chauhan, an MA second-year student, allegedly opened fire at Singh, causing him to collapse on the ground. Chauhan, along with his aides, immediately fled the scene after committing the crime, evading capture.
Upon receiving information about the shooting, police personnel swiftly arrived at the college. They rushed the injured Singh to the BHU Trauma Centre for emergency medical treatment. Unfortunately, doctors at the trauma centre declared him dead upon arrival, confirming the fatal outcome of the attack.
Student Outrage and Police Response
The violent incident sparked immediate outrage among other students on campus. Enraged by the shooting and the loss of their fellow student, they ransacked college furniture and raised slogans against the principal, demanding accountability and justice.
In response to the escalating tension and the seriousness of the situation, authorities called in heavy police reinforcements. Forces from several police stations, along with the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), were deployed to the campus. The college grounds have been effectively turned into a cantonment to maintain order and prevent further unrest.
The police have launched a manhunt to apprehend the accused, Manjeet Chauhan, who remains at large. The investigation is ongoing to determine the motive behind the shooting and to ensure that all individuals involved are brought to justice.
