Varanasi Police Take Action Against Wedding Procession Causing Major Traffic Disruption

In a significant enforcement move, the Bhelupur police in Varanasi have officially registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the operator of a marriage lawn, along with the DJ and lighting crew, following a chaotic wedding procession that brought traffic to a standstill on the Bhagwanpur-Sudarpur road late Tuesday night.

Commuters Alert Authorities to Road Blockage

The incident unfolded when frustrated commuters, trapped in the resulting gridlock, reached out to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Bhelupur, Gaurav Kumar. Responding promptly to the public distress, ACP Kumar confirmed on Wednesday that legal action has been initiated against Vaishnavi Lawn and the associated DJ and light operators.

The charges include:

  • Encroaching on public road space
  • Severely disrupting the flow of traffic
  • Creating significant noise pollution by blaring DJ music at excessively high volumes

Violation of Police Directives on Road Usage

ACP Kumar emphasized that the wedding procession flagrantly violated a clear advisory issued under the directive of the Police Commissioner. This advisory mandates that wedding processions should occupy no more than 25% of the width of city roads to ensure minimal disruption.

"Despite the explicit guidelines, the procession occupied over 75% of the road width," stated ACP Kumar. "This deliberate action caused a complete road blockage, obstructing traffic for an extended period while loud music played incessantly."

Police Intervention and Clearance of the Jam

Upon receiving the alert, a team from Bhelupur police station swiftly arrived at the scene. Their immediate priority was to clear the massive traffic jam that had formed, restoring normal movement on the crucial Bhagwanpur-Sudarpur route. The filing of the FIR represents a formal step to hold the responsible parties accountable and deter similar violations in the future.

This incident highlights ongoing challenges in managing public events in congested urban areas and underscores the police's commitment to enforcing regulations designed to maintain order and public convenience.
