The Anti-Corruption Team in Varanasi arrested a junior engineer (JE) of the electricity department on Friday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 22,000. The arrest took place in the Pandeypur area.
Details of the Complaint
Inspector Umashankar Yadav stated that the complainant, Amit Kumar Srivastava, a resident of Taktakpur, had applied online on June 6 for a temporary electricity connection for the construction of his new house in Manshanagar Colony. On June 10, Srivastava met JE Sukhdev Rastogi at the Pandeypur electricity sub-station to follow up on his application. During the meeting, Rastogi allegedly demanded Rs 22,000 to process the connection.
How the Trap Was Laid
On Friday, the JE called the applicant to his plot. At around 11:44 am, as soon as Rastogi accepted the bribe, the Anti-Corruption Team caught him red-handed. A chemical test was conducted at the scene, and the water turned pink when the JE's hands were washed, confirming contact with the treated currency notes. The team also recovered the full bribe amount from his possession.
This operation highlights the ongoing efforts to curb corruption in public services. Further investigation is underway.
