Varanasi Police Launch Major Crackdown on Airport Taxi Harassment
In a significant enforcement action at Varanasi's Lal Bahadur Shastri International (LBSI) Airport, police authorities have arrested four taxi drivers and confiscated two vehicles following numerous complaints of passenger harassment. The crackdown targets drivers who allegedly used coercive tactics and aggressive behavior to force arriving travelers into their cabs near the terminal building.
Systematic Harassment and Traffic Disruption
According to official reports, the problem had been escalating for some time, with taxi drivers repeatedly ignoring established regulations. Instead of waiting in designated parking areas, many operators parked their vehicles directly on the arrival lane, actively intercepting passengers as they exited the terminal. This practice not only created chaotic scenes but also significantly disrupted airport traffic flow.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Varuna zone) Akash Patel confirmed that monitoring revealed multiple instances of drivers using abusive language and displaying aggressive behavior when passengers declined their services. "The situation had become untenable," stated Patel. "Complaints about coercion and rude behavior had been piling up, necessitating decisive intervention."
Warning Meetings and Subsequent Enforcement
Prior to taking punitive measures, authorities conducted multiple meetings with taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers operating at the airport premises. During these sessions, drivers were explicitly warned to adhere to specific guidelines:
- Remain in designated parking areas rather than blocking arrival lanes
- Avoid surrounding or pressuring passengers
- Maintain respectful conduct toward all airport users
Despite these clear directives, many drivers continued to violate the rules, prompting police to implement stricter measures. Authorities identified repeat offenders through surveillance before taking what they described as "stern action" against the most problematic operators.
Permanent Police Presence Established
As part of the ongoing solution, police have now deployed four officers permanently on airport premises to monitor driver behavior and ensure compliance with regulations. This continuous oversight aims to prevent future incidents of harassment and maintain orderly operations at one of Uttar Pradesh's busiest aviation hubs.
The arrests and vehicle seizures serve as a strong warning to all transport operators at LBSI Airport that passenger harassment will not be tolerated. Authorities emphasize that similar actions will be taken against any drivers who continue to disregard established protocols designed to protect travelers and maintain efficient airport functioning.
