Varanasi Police Enforces Strict Safety Measures for Ganga Boat Operations
In a significant move to enhance safety on the sacred Ganga River, the Varanasi police administration has issued a comprehensive directive mandating that no boat can operate without life jackets and proper registration. This initiative aims to protect the lives of travelers and devotees who frequent the river's ghats.
Key Directives for Boatmen
Police Commissioner Mohit Agrawal, during a meeting at the Traffic Hall on Wednesday, outlined several critical safety protocols. All boatmen are now required to ensure 100% compliance with safety guidelines, including:
- A complete ban on seating passengers beyond the prescribed capacity of boats.
- Mandatory availability of safety equipment such as life jackets, ropes, torches, and first-aid materials during operation.
- Use of only designated safe routes in deep-water areas, avoiding restricted zones without permission.
- Maintaining a safe distance from other boats to prevent collisions.
- Controlling boat speed at strong currents, whirlpools, or sensitive spots.
Violation of these guidelines will result in fines and possible seizure of the boat, with strict action promised against those found overloading or charging extra fares. Boatmen were specifically cautioned to treat devotees as guests and adhere to ethical practices.
Recognition for Heroic Rescue Efforts
In a heartwarming gesture, Commissioner Agrawal felicitated three boatmen—Akash Sahni, Chhotu Sahni, and Rakesh Sahni—for their bravery in risking their lives to rescue drowning bathers at the ghats. Their heroic actions, involving jumping into the Ganga to save lives, were highlighted as an example of community spirit and dedication.
Administrative Coordination and Support
During the meeting, the police administration also addressed issues raised by boatmen, directing concerned officers to resolve them promptly. Boatmen were encouraged to work in coordination with the administration and to immediately inform the police about any problems or emergencies. In case of emergencies, they are required to notify the nearest water police station without delay.
This directive underscores the topmost priority of ensuring the safety of all travelers and devotees on the Ganga, reinforcing the importance of compliance with safety standards and fostering a collaborative environment between boatmen and authorities.
