A 20-year-old student of a private nursing institute was discovered unconscious in a pool of blood on the stairs of a guest house in Varanasi on Wednesday. The Sarnath police are awaiting the postmortem report, but it is suspected that her boyfriend administered medication to terminate her three-month pregnancy, leading to her death. The accused was arrested from his residence in Jaunpur district late Wednesday night.
Incident Details
ACP (Sarnath) Vidush Saxena stated that the woman was found unconscious on the stairs of a guest house adjacent to a private nursing college on Wednesday morning. Police rushed her to a hospital, where she was declared dead. Doctors could not determine the cause of death as no external injuries were visible. The body was sent for postmortem, and the report is awaited to ascertain the actual cause of death.
Family's Complaint and Investigation
The deceased's father, a policeman posted in Chandauli district, filed a complaint. Based on this, a senior student from the same college was taken into custody for questioning. Further action will be taken after the postmortem report and a formal complaint from the family.
Around 11:30 am on Wednesday, an electrician at the guest house noticed the body and raised an alarm. The watchman alerted the police, who rushed the woman to the hospital. The guest house operates as a boys' hostel for the nursing college where both the woman and her alleged boyfriend studied.
Arrest and Confession
Following initial questioning of the watchman and family members, and after checking her call records, police traced the boyfriend to his home in Mirganj, Jaunpur district, and apprehended him. During interrogation, he revealed that he was a third-year student at the nursing college, while the woman was a year junior. He confessed to a two-year relationship and disclosed that she was three months pregnant. The couple had sought help from qualified doctors, but they refused to terminate the pregnancy without parental consent.
The duo then decided to use medication to induce abortion, based on information from books and the internet. It is suspected that the medicine caused severe bleeding. The accused panicked upon seeing blood and fled to his home in Jaunpur.
Police Statement
Police noted that heavy bleeding was evident, but they will only reach a conclusion about the actual cause of death after receiving the postmortem report.
