Tensions erupted in Chomu town of Rajasthan on Friday morning, resulting in injuries to four police personnel and leading authorities to suspend internet services as a precautionary measure. The violence broke out during a police operation to remove alleged encroachments outside a local mosque.
What Triggered the Clash in Chomu?
The incident has its roots in a dispute over the use of public space. According to police officials, discussions were held on Thursday evening between the local administration and community members regarding stones that had been placed on the road outside the mosque. The community members had reportedly agreed to remove these stones voluntarily.
However, after the stones were cleared, a new point of contention arose. Some individuals allegedly began installing iron railings to create a boundary outside the mosque. This new structure was deemed an encroachment on the public roadway, prompting fresh objections from authorities.
Violence Erupts During Removal Drive
The situation escalated on Friday morning when police arrived with an excavator to dismantle the newly erected iron railings. As the removal operation began, some miscreants started hurling stones at the police team and the excavator machine.
Four policemen sustained injuries in the stone-pelting attack and were subsequently admitted to a hospital for treatment. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Chomu, Usha Yadav, stated that two to three other individuals also received minor injuries during the confrontation.
To control the volatile situation, police used tear gas shells and mild force to disperse the crowd. Additional police force was swiftly rushed to the spot from Chomu, Harmada, Vishwakarma, Daulatpura, and other nearby police stations.
Administrative Response and Current Situation
Senior police officials were quick to respond. Director General of Police (Law and Order) Sanjay Agarwal asserted that the situation was completely under control and warned of strict action against those who took the law into their own hands.
In a significant move to prevent the spread of rumors and organize further unrest, internet services have been suspended in Chomu for 24 hours as a precautionary step. Police personnel have been conducting flag marches across the town since morning to project a sense of order and deter any further violence.
Law enforcement has also formed special teams with a clear mandate: to identify and arrest all individuals involved in the violence. The injured police personnel are currently receiving medical care.
Chomu, located approximately 40 kilometers from the state capital Jaipur, remains under a heightened security blanket as authorities work to ensure peace and normalcy returns to the town.
