Vizag Police Intensify Crackdown on Tech-Savvy Cricket Betting Rackets
Despite heightened police efforts to curb illegal cricket betting activities in Visakhapatnam, a concerning trend has emerged where tech-savvy youngsters continue to promote these operations through social media platforms. Authorities have observed that these individuals are exploiting digital tools to lure gullible youth with false promises of easy money through betting.
Recent Arrests Highlight Sophisticated Operations
In a significant development, cybercrime police in Vizag city arrested 26-year-old Gudivada Abhiram on April 15. The resident of Gajuwaka locality, who presented himself as a prediction analyst while involved in business, was apprehended for promoting the illegal online cricket betting portal www.southbook.in through his Telegram channel named Mastermind Prediction.
Just days earlier, law enforcement arrested two brothers—Vana Sai Ganesh (25), who works as a basketball coach at a private college in Vizag city, and Vana Anil Kumar (29). Both residents of the Madhurawada locality were taken into custody for allegedly promoting illegal online cricket betting activities through social media and enticing young people with unrealistic financial promises.
BTech Graduates Among Those Apprehended
A senior police officer from the Vizag city cybercrimes police station revealed that four additional individuals were arrested earlier this year in January, including three BTech graduates. The arrested include Desineni Sumanth alias Nani (25), a native of Tirupati, along with L Ganesh (27), K Murali (21), and M Bhadreswar Reddy (22), all hailing from Guntur district.
These individuals were allegedly creating Telegram channels and promoting illegal cricket betting applications, demonstrating how educated youth are being drawn into criminal activities.
Modus Operandi of the Fraudsters
According to police officials, unemployed tech-savvy youngsters are being driven by the lure of quick money to create Telegram channels, build follower bases, and then promote Dubai-based online cricket betting websites. These operators reportedly earn substantial sums—ranging from thousands to lakhs of rupees—by directing vulnerable youth toward betting operations.
The fraudsters employ sophisticated tactics, including sharing cricket match predictions through their channels to attract punters' attention and build credibility among their followers.
Devastating Consequences for Victims
The police have documented severe financial consequences for those caught in these betting schemes. Most youngsters involved are losing lakhs of rupees through betting operations, with some victims taking extreme measures in response to their losses.
In a recent case, a youngster from Vizag city believed promotional cricket predictions on social media and participated in betting expecting good returns. Instead, he lost more than Rs 12.5 lakh and subsequently approached the Vizag cybercrimes police station seeking action against the so-called cricket prediction analysts.
Police Appeal for Public Cooperation
Vizag city police chief Dr. Shankabrata Bagchi has made a public appeal to Vizag residents, urging them to report any information about advertisements and promotions of cricket betting websites on social networking platforms. This cooperation is essential for police to effectively identify and apprehend the fraudsters behind these illegal operations.
The ongoing crackdown highlights the intersection of technology, youth unemployment, and organized crime in the digital age, with authorities working diligently to protect vulnerable citizens from financial exploitation.
