Para-Legal Volunteer Rushes 5km to Save Teenage Girl After Brutal Family Attack

In a remarkable display of courage and humanity, a para-legal volunteer named Chandradeo Prajapati rushed approximately 5 kilometers to save the life of a 17-year-old girl who had been brutally attacked with an axe and was bleeding profusely from her neck. This heroic intervention occurred in the Kusri hamlet under the Aashehar panchayat of Palamu district, where members of the girl's own village had refused to respond to her life-threatening situation due to fears of police harassment.

Family Massacred in Black Magic Allegation Attack

The horrific incident took place on Sunday when Mamta Bhuiyan was found lying beside the bodies of her three family members: her father Vijay Bhuiyan, mother Hemanti Devi, and brother Chotu. All four had been attacked by two individuals who accused the family of practicing black magic, allegedly blaming them for the natural death of their elderly father after a prolonged illness.

According to eyewitness accounts, Mamta lay bleeding from deep neck wounds while villagers stood by, unwilling to help. "No one stepped forward to help Mamta, fearing police harassment and questioning," witnesses reported, casting doubt on local law enforcement attitudes that they said often discourage people from assisting victims of heinous crimes.

Volunteer's Timely Intervention Saves Life

Prajapati, who hails from Sundi panchayat about 5km from the crime scene, received a call while on his way to Jhalkhandi temple with his daughter for her birthday blessings. "Without having any second thoughts, I took my daughter home without visiting the temple and rushed to the Kusri hamlet at breakneck speed," he recounted.

Upon arrival, Prajapati used his gamcha (towel) to wrap around Mamta's bleeding neck and transported her on his motorcycle with her sister-in-law Nilam to the community health centre at Panki. He made a crucial stop at Aasehar chowk where a village doctor provided proper bandaging before arranging a private four-wheeler for the final journey to medical care.

Official Recognition and Support for Survivor

Rakesh Ranjan, Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), praised Prajapati's actions, stating: "Our para-legal volunteer saved a girl. He did a great service to humanity. He has come as a godsend for the wounded girl." Ranjan emphasized that any hesitation could have resulted in tragedy, but Prajapati's prompt response gave Mamta a second life.

The DLSA secretary visited Mamta at MMCH in Daltonganj and directed medical superintendent Dr. Ajay Kumar to provide all necessary treatment. He assured that Mamta's medical expenses would be covered under the Victim Compensation Scheme, with adequate financial assistance and rehabilitation support, particularly crucial as she lost both parents and her brother in the attack.

Community Impact and Broader Implications

The entire district legal services authority unit in Daltonganj has expressed pride in Prajapati's actions, recognizing him as "the face of humanitarian aid at a time of severe distress." The incident highlights ongoing challenges in rural communities where superstition and fear of authority can prevent timely assistance to crime victims.

Police arrived at the scene after Prajapati, according to the DLSA secretary's account. The two perpetrators, identified as Pramod Bhuiyan and Ravindra Bhuiyan, attacked the family based on their belief that black magic caused their father's natural death, leaving Mamta for dead before Prajapati's timely intervention.

Mamta Bhuiyan continues to recuperate at the medical facility, responding well to treatment according to hospital authorities, while legal proceedings against the attackers are underway.
