Notorious Criminal with 90 Cases Killed in Police Encounter in Shamli

In a dramatic late-night operation on Thursday, a Delhi-based criminal wanted in at least 90 cases across Delhi-NCR and Uttar Pradesh was killed in a police encounter in Shamli. The deceased, identified as Mohammad Rehan, 34, a resident of Zakir Nagar in New Okhla, Delhi, was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 for his capture.

Encounter Follows Robbery Incident

According to Shamli Superintendent of Police NP Singh, the encounter was triggered by a robbery in the Babri area around 8:30 pm. Two men allegedly snatched a ring, purse, mobile phone, and cash from a victim, prompting an immediate police alert. Authorities swiftly set up checkpoints across the district to intercept the suspects.

Gunfight Erupts During Interception

Around 11:30 pm, a police team intercepted two bike-borne suspects on Kaserwa Road under the Kotwali police station area. When ordered to surrender, the accused allegedly opened fire at the police team. In the ensuing gunfight, police retaliated, resulting in constable Sumit Kumar sustaining a bullet injury to his right hand.

Recovery of Evidence and Escape of Accomplice

Injured during the exchange, Rehan was taken into custody, while his unidentified accomplice managed to escape. Police recovered significant evidence from Rehan, including:

  • A Turkish-made Beretta pistol
  • Another pistol
  • Eight live cartridges and seven empty cartridges
  • The looted mobile phone along with another mobile phone
  • Rs 500 in cash
  • Two silver rings

Rehan was rushed to the district hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries and died during medical care. The incident highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat crime in the region, particularly targeting high-profile criminals with extensive criminal records.
