Wanted Criminal Shot in Both Legs in Gopalganj Encounter

Patna: A wanted criminal, Akash Kumar, who carried a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head, was shot in both legs during a late-night exchange of fire with the police in the Gopalganj district. The incident took place at the Thave-Banjari bypass under the Nagar police station area. After being hit by police bullets, Akash collapsed and was taken into custody. He was initially admitted to the sadar hospital but later referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) due to the seriousness of his condition.

Previous Arrest and Weapon Recovery Attempt

Akash had been arrested earlier from Haryana. According to the police, the gunfight erupted when he was being taken to Sundar Patti for the recovery of weapons. During the process, he opened fire at the police, prompting them to retaliate. Illegal arms, live cartridges, and spent shells were recovered from the spot.

Background of the Accused

Akash is a resident of Baraipatti village under the Thave police station area of Gopalganj. Police officials revealed that he has around 12 criminal cases pending against him, including charges of murder, attempt to murder, loot, and violations of the Arms Act. These cases are registered at the Thave, Town, and Kuchaikote police stations. Recently, he had demanded Rs 5 lakh as extortion from a businessman in Thave and gained notoriety after shooting a biker in broad daylight in Mirganj.

Police Operation Details

Gopalganj SP Vinay Tiwari provided details of the operation. He stated, "During interrogation, Akash disclosed where he had hidden weapons. A police team took him to a spot near the Thave-Banjari bypass for recovery. While retrieving the weapon from the bushes, Akash opened fire at the police and attempted to escape. In self-defence, the police retaliated and shot him in both legs."

After being injured, Akash was taken to the sadar hospital. Sadar SDPO Chandan Kumar reached the hospital and questioned him. Police confirmed that a pistol was seized from his possession, and further legal action is underway.

Role of Police Officials

Town SHO Pravin Prabhakar, Thave SHO Vibha Kumari, and the DIU team played a key role in the operation. The police are continuing further investigation to trace his associates and the network of the gang he is believed to be part of.
