Wanted Gangster Amritpal Singh Detained at Moldova Border via Interpol Notice

In a significant breakthrough for law enforcement, Amritpal Singh, also known as Amrit Dalam, one of Punjab's most wanted gangsters associated with the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang, has been detained on the Moldova border. This detention was executed based on an Interpol red corner notice issued at the request of Punjab Police, in close coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and other central agencies.

International Coordination Leads to Arrest

The successful operation highlights the enhanced international cooperation in tracking down fugitives. Punjab Police recently established the Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC), headed by IG-counterintelligence Ashish Choudhary, specifically to pursue criminals hiding abroad and facilitate their extradition to face legal proceedings in Punjab. This initiative played a crucial role in Amritpal Singh's detention.

Amritpal Singh, a native of Dalam Nangal village in Batala, had fled the country using a fake passport. Despite being overseas, police sources indicate that he continued to engage in criminal activities, making extortion calls to businessmen, particularly in the Amritsar region. His actions underscored the urgency of bringing him to justice.

Serious Charges and Legal Proceedings

Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav stated that Amritpal Singh is wanted in several serious cases, including murder, attempted murder, and drug smuggling within Punjab. "His detention follows sustained international coordination and persistent follow-up by Punjab Police agencies," Yadav emphasized. He added that legal and diplomatic procedures are currently underway to secure his extradition or deportation to India, ensuring he faces the law for his alleged crimes.

The establishment of OFTEC marks a proactive step by Punjab Police to combat transnational crime. DGP Yadav noted that the cell is actively pursuing various other criminals who are hiding abroad, aiming to dismantle criminal networks and enhance public safety. This detention serves as a testament to the effectiveness of such specialized units in tackling organized crime across borders.
