In a significant move to enhance road safety during the harsh winter months, authorities have announced a reduction in speed limits on two major expressways in the National Capital Region. The decision, driven by concerns over dense fog and cold weather conditions, will be in effect for a two-month period.
Revised Speed Limits for Winter Safety
Officials confirmed that on the Yamuna Expressway, the permissible speed for light vehicles such as cars and SUVs will be lowered from 100 km per hour to 75 kmph. This change will be enforced from December 15 to February 15. For heavy vehicles, including trucks and buses, the limit will remain unchanged at 60 kmph.
A similar directive applies to the Noida Expressway. Here, light vehicles will also be restricted to a maximum of 75 kmph, while heavy vehicles must adhere to a lower limit of 50 kmph during the same winter window.
Police Cite Visibility and Road Conditions
A senior police official explained the rationale behind the annual measure. "Visibility drops sharply during the winter months, making high-speed driving extremely hazardous," he stated. The official further highlighted that freezing temperatures can make roads slippery and compromise vehicle control, increasing the risk of accidents.
"The limit is reduced every year for these two months starting December 15," he added. Authorities plan to hold meetings with various stakeholders to discuss and implement additional road safety measures for the season.
Proactive Steps by Toll Authorities
JK Sharma, Senior Manager for Yamuna Expressway toll operations, outlined the comprehensive steps being taken to ensure compliance and safety. Advisories are being broadcast via public address systems at toll plazas to alert drivers about the new limits and foggy conditions.
In a bid to increase visibility, reflective tapes are being pasted on commercial vehicles. Furthermore, patrol teams have been tasked with clearing unauthorised parked vehicles from the expressways to prevent obstructions.
Staff at key toll plazas, including Jewar, Mathura, and Agra, are actively sensitizing motorists, urging them to follow traffic rules and remain vigilant. In a thoughtful welfare measure, tea is being offered to truck drivers at night to help combat fatigue during long hauls.
This coordinated effort between traffic police and expressway authorities underscores a committed approach to minimizing accidents and ensuring the safety of all commuters during the challenging winter driving season.
