A 23-year-old resident of Navi Mumbai was arrested on Monday for allegedly strangling her baby five days after giving birth. The accused, identified as Ashwini Chandanshive, reportedly told the police that she had only learned of her pregnancy during the seventh month and felt unable to raise a second child.
Details of the Incident
According to Satish Chabukswar, inspector (crime) at Turbhe police station, Chandanshive already has an 18-month-old daughter to care for. She claimed that she approached a gynecologist to medically terminate the pregnancy, but the doctor refused because the gestation had already reached the 28th week.
Chandanshive gave birth to the baby at a civic hospital in Vashi on June 3. She was discharged four days later and moved in with her sister-in-law, Ashwini Sainath Suryatale. Her husband, who works as a driver, was away at the time.
The Alleged Confession
On June 8, Suryatale returned from work to find the newborn motionless. Upon questioning, Chandanshive allegedly confessed to strangling the infant. The police have since arrested her and are investigating the case further.
