Delhi Police SWAT Commando Dies After Alleged Assault by Husband with Dumbbell

A 27-year-old woman, serving as a SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) commando with the Delhi Police Special Cell, tragically passed away during treatment on Tuesday, five days after she was allegedly assaulted by her husband using a dumbbell, according to police reports. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting severe issues of domestic violence and dowry demands.

Details of the Assault and Arrest

The victim, identified as Kajal, a 2022-batch recruit of the Delhi Police, was allegedly attacked by her husband, Ankur, at their residence in West Delhi's Mohan Garden. Police stated that she sustained severe head injuries after being struck multiple times with an exercise dumbbell. Ankur, who works as a clerk in the Ministry of Defence, was arrested on January 22, the same day as the assault. Initially booked for attempt to murder, the charges are expected to be upgraded to murder following Kajal's death.

Background of the Couple and Dowry Allegations

Kajal and Ankur, who married in 2023 after a love marriage, have a one-and-a-half-year-old son. However, their relationship was marred by disputes, primarily over dowry demands. Kajal's elder brother, Nikhil, a constable attached to the Parliament Street police station, revealed that Ankur's family began making comments about dowry almost immediately after the wedding. This led the couple to shift from Ganaur in Sonipat, where they lived with in-laws, to a flat in Mohan Garden, but they later returned to Ganaur due to Ankur's insistence on staying with his family.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Tragedy

On January 22, during an argument, Ankur allegedly called Nikhil while Kajal made offensive remarks. Ankur asked Nikhil to record the call, and soon after, Nikhil heard screams before the call disconnected. Five minutes later, Ankur called back, claiming he had killed Kajal. Before fleeing, Ankur took an unconscious Kajal to a private hospital in Mohan Garden, where Nikhil found her. As her condition worsened, she was transferred to Yashoda Hospital in Nehru Nagar on January 24 and succumbed to her injuries around 6 am on Tuesday.

Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings

The information about Kajal's death was first received by Ghaziabad's Sihani Gate police station, which notified the Delhi Police. A post-mortem examination was conducted on Tuesday. While no dowry charges have been added to the FIR yet, police are investigating the allegations. The case underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of laws against domestic violence and dowry harassment in India.
