Woman cop's gold chain snatched in Zirakpur

In a brazen act of crime, a woman police constable became the latest victim of chain snatching in Zirakpur, Mohali. The incident highlights a worrying trend of similar robberies in the region.

Constable Targeted on Her Way to Market

The victim, identified as Anju, a constable with the Chandigarh Police and a resident of Saini Vihar, Phase 5, Zirakpur, was heading to a local market on the evening of December 2. At approximately 7:30 PM, a motorcyclist approached her from behind. The assailant swiftly snatched her gold chain weighing about 2.5 tolas before speeding away through narrow lanes.

Anju reported that the area was poorly lit, which hampered her ability to get a clear look at the culprit or note down the motorcycle's registration number. However, she provided a description, stating the accused was wearing a helmet and a cream-colored jacket. She expressed confidence that she could identify him if he was produced before her.

Police Launch Investigation Under New Law

After initially trying to trace the accused herself, Anju, accompanied by her husband, filed a formal complaint at the Zirakpur police station. Acting on her statement, the police have registered a case. The investigation has been registered under Section 304 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the new penal code.

Head Constable Kuldeep Singh has been assigned to investigate the matter. Police teams are actively scanning CCTV footage from nearby houses, shops, and street cameras to identify the motorcycle and the snatcher. Patrolling teams in the area have also been alerted.

Part of a Disturbing Pattern of Crime

This is not an isolated incident. Police officials have linked this robbery to a recent spike in similar crimes in and around Zirakpur. The authorities confirmed at least two other chain-snatching cases in recent weeks:

  • On November 14, 2025: Two bike-borne assailants snatched a gold chain with a pendant from a scooter rider, Mandeep Kaur, on Babatpur Road. The incident, caught on CCTV, involved a chain valued at around Rs 2 lakh.
  • On November 26, 2025, around 2 PM: In a bold daylight robbery, two unidentified youths on a motorcycle snatched a gold chain from Anuradha, a school teacher residing in Sigma City, Lohgarh. This crime was also captured on camera.

In response to this rising menace, the police have formed special teams to trace the accused involved in these cases and to curb the incidence of chain snatching in the region. The targeting of a police personnel underscores the audacity of the criminals operating in the area.
