A 58-year-old woman from Andhra Pradesh met with a tragic end on November 27 after falling from a moving train at Dadar railway station. The heartbreaking incident occurred when the woman attempted to disembark from the train following a visit to its toilet.
The Fateful Afternoon at Dadar Station
The accident took place at approximately 2:23 pm on Platform No. 10 of the Central Railway at Dadar. According to official reports from the Dadar Railway Police, the woman had traveled to Mumbai with her son for tourism purposes. They were scheduled to travel from Dadar to Ambernath, where they were staying at a relative's residence.
Earlier that day, the mother and son had visited several popular Mumbai landmarks including Haji Ali. During their time at Dadar station in the afternoon, the woman realized she needed to use the washroom. Unable to locate a restroom on the platform itself, she made the fateful decision to board a long-distance express train bound for Hyderabad specifically to use its toilet facilities.
The Tragic Sequence of Events
As the woman completed using the toilet and returned to the train door, the unexpected happened - the train began to move. Her son, who had accompanied her, managed to safely disembark from the moving train. However, when the woman attempted to follow him, tragedy struck.
She fell into the dangerous gap between the platform and the tracks and was crushed by the moving train. Her son immediately raised an alarm, alerting the Government Railway Police and fellow passengers at the scene.
Aftermath and Investigation
The injured woman was rushed to Sion Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Despite doctors' best efforts, she succumbed to her injuries two hours later. The Dadar Railway Police registered an Accidental Death Report on the same day of the incident.
There was some confusion regarding the woman's citizenship status, with a relative claiming she was a UK citizen. However, Anil Kadam, Senior Police Inspector of the Dadar Railway Police, clarified the actual situation. He confirmed that while the woman's husband lives in London and works as a cook on a ship, the woman herself resided in Andhra Pradesh with her son. The husband has been informed about the tragic incident.
This unfortunate event highlights the ongoing challenges of railway safety and infrastructure at busy Indian railway stations, particularly regarding passenger access to basic amenities like toilets.
