Woman dies at Patna hospital, dowry harassment case filed

A 27-year-old married woman died at a Patna hospital on Saturday after undergoing treatment for four days, prompting police to register a case of dowry harassment and attempted murder against her in-laws.

The woman, Ruby Singh, lived in a rented flat in R K Puram under the Danapur police station area. After a post-mortem examination, her body was handed over to family members.

Based on a complaint lodged by her father, police registered an FIR against her husband, mother-in-law, father-in-law and sister-in-law. The family alleged she had faced persistent dowry-related harassment since her marriage on May 4, 2022. The couple has a two-and-a-half-year-old son.

According to the complaint, Ruby had earlier returned to her parental home following disputes with her in-laws but later went back after intervention by family members. Her relatives alleged that on June 5, she was taken to Sitamarhi by her in-laws for a social function.

Four days later, her husband informed the family that she had fallen ill and was admitted to a private hospital near Saguna More in Patna. When relatives reached the hospital, they allegedly found no member of her in-laws’ family present.

The complainant alleged locals informed them that Ruby had been assaulted and an attempt had been made to kill her by hanging. The family claimed the accused rushed her to hospital after neighbours intervened and then left the premises.

Ruby succumbed to her injuries on Saturday.

Danapur police station SHO Prashant Kumar Bhardwaj said an FIR had been registered and the matter was under investigation. He said police were examining all aspects of the case and further action would be taken on the basis of the post-mortem report and evidence collected during the probe.

Police have arrested the mother-in-law and sent her to judicial custody, while efforts are underway to trace the remaining accused.
