Woman Doctor Found Dead, Husband Booked for Abetment

A 37-year-old government doctor was discovered dead at her residence in Jalandhar on Wednesday, leading to a police case of abetment to suicide against her husband, an eye surgeon. The deceased's parents have accused the husband of having extramarital affairs, subjecting her to physical violence, and taking a loan of Rs 2.5 crore in her name without her knowledge.

The doctor was employed at a civil hospital, while her husband owns a hospital on Kapurthala Road in Jalandhar. She had been living separately from him since last year and had been demanding a mutual divorce, repayment of a loan she had taken for him, and the removal of her name from the Rs 2.5 crore loan, according to her mother.

According to a complaint filed by her father, a resident of Jalalabad in Fazilka district, the deceased took a loan of Rs 45 lakh to help her husband establish his hospital shortly after their marriage in 2018. She repaid the installments from her salary. In 2023, she discovered his extramarital affairs and found a video of him with another woman, which she handed over to the police.

The father alleged that despite efforts to resolve the issues, the husband began physically abusing her. In 2025, he allegedly attempted to strangle her, prompting her to contact a police helpline. She then moved to a rented house separately. When she checked her CIBIL score while planning to buy a new house, she discovered a loan of Rs 2.5 crore had been taken in her name without her consent. Her husband allegedly threatened her when she asked him to remove her name from the loan, leading to severe stress and her suicide.

The FIR has been registered at Division VI police station under Section 108 of the BNS (abetment of suicide).

The doctor's mother recounted that her daughter frequently called her, reporting that her husband beat her but later apologized. She tried to make things work until last year when she realized she could not continue living with him. She made two demands: remove her name from the Rs 2.5 crore loan and repay Rs 70 lakh for the Rs 45 lakh loan she had taken for him after marriage, which she had fully repaid. She sought no property share but wanted a mutual divorce. However, her husband ignored her and subjected her to further mental harassment.
