Indore: A 48-year-old daily wage labourer was duped of approximately 500 grams of silver anklets after a man lured her with the promise of a Rs 600-per-day job at an under-construction Jain temple in Sinhasa village, Indore district.
How the Scam Unfolded
The woman, Gulabbai Gedele, a resident of Patel Nagar, had gone to Khajrana Square on Friday in search of work. A man on a motorcycle approached her and claimed that a temple construction site beyond Chandan Nagar required a woman worker for cooking duties, offering Rs 600 as wages, police said.
Trusting the offer, Gulabbai accompanied him on his motorcycle. Instead of taking her directly to the worksite, the accused first took her to the Sarafa area. There, he told her that workers were not allowed to wear jewellery on the temple premises and asked her to remove the silver anklets from both feet. The woman complied and wrapped them in a cloth bundle.
The Deception
The accused then took her to Sinhasa village and convinced her that the jewellery would not be safe with her. He offered to keep the bundle in his custody and asked her to hand it over. After taking the bundle, he told the woman he was going to the temple and would return shortly, but never came back.
Realising she had been cheated, the woman informed her family and later approached the police. ACP Shivendu Joshi said a case has been registered and teams are examining CCTV footage from nearby locations to identify and trace the accused.
Police Investigation Underway
The Chandan Nagar police have registered a case and started an investigation. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify the suspect. The victim, Gulabbai Gedele, is a daily wage labourer who was seeking employment when the incident occurred.
This case highlights the vulnerability of job seekers to fraudulent offers. Police advise citizens to verify job offers and avoid handing over valuables to strangers.
