Hisar: Police have booked a woman's husband and four in-laws on charges of abetment to suicide after she was found dead in Kanwari village of Hansi district. The deceased's family suspects foul play and alleges that Veena was murdered before being hanged to make it appear as a suicide.
Case Registered at Hansi Sadar Police Station
According to police, the case was registered at Hansi Sadar police station based on a complaint from the victim's mother, Nirmala Devi, a resident of Ding Mandi village in Sirsa district. The accused include Veena's husband Ramesh, brothers-in-law Bhaumi and Harpal, sister-in-law Manju, and mother-in-law Prem.
Allegations of Harassment and Demands for Money
Nirmala Devi alleged that her daughter Veena had faced physical and mental harassment from her husband and in-laws since her marriage 15 years ago. She claimed that Veena's husband, who is addicted to alcohol, often demanded money and assaulted her when she refused. The family also accused the in-laws of questioning Veena's character after she began working in Hisar to support her children.
Further, they alleged that Veena's share in the house was forcibly occupied and her jewellery was mortgaged under pressure. Veena is survived by two sons and a daughter.
Suspicious Death and Ongoing Investigation
Nirmala Devi added that the family received a phone call on Wednesday afternoon informing them that Veena had hanged herself. However, upon reaching the village, they suspected foul play. Police have stated that the matter is under investigation and further action will be taken based on evidence and post-mortem findings.
The incident highlights ongoing issues of domestic violence and dowry-related harassment in the region. Authorities are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the exact cause of death.
